Exercise program for female astronauts

Collaboration with a gym chain, sport medicine specialist or sporting goods manufacturer

Description

Astronauts need to do exercise in Space for approximately 2,5 hours everyday. This time includes preparation before and after the actual exercise program. Three different exercise devices are available on the ISS: Ergometer Treadmill Advanced Resistive Exercise Device These will be used to maintain cardio fitness and to counteract the adverse effects of weightlessness to prevent bone loss and muscle atrophy. The basic idea is to develop a dedicated exercise program for the female astronaut in combination with heart rate measurement, lactate control and VO2max estimation. Latter ones are of some importance since the entire cardiovascular system is reacting to the microgravity environment. Data from female astronauts are not yet available in Germany. During the flight preparation astronauts have to follow an exercise program in order to estimate relevant parameters such as maximum heart rate, aerobe/anaerobe range, recovery time, etc. These parameters shall be measured during the flight and after the return to obtain the influences from the stay in Space. This suggestion seeks for a collaboration with e.g. a gym chain, which shall make use of this development for their clients on earth such as „Train like an astronaut“. This idea can be connected to other suggestions, which have been made already: Sports Clothing from the Space Hybrid clothing Spotify Space Playlist for Astronauts space workout
